BIOGRAPHY
Nabila Ayu Aviani (b. 2000) is an Indonesian-born figurative painter, raised in the United Arab Emirates and based in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2023, Nabila graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague. Her earlier works tackled mental health and identity crisis by using painting as ‘visual diaries’ that captured the highs and lows of self-exploration. Influenced by the Y2K trend, her works have evolved to blend traditional painting with the digital aesthetics of the early internet era.
Influenced by her multicultural background, themes of belonging, fragmentation and memory reconstruction arise in her vibrant paintings. Nabila uses painting as a medium to reconstruct memories and capture the raw energy of the youth. By digitally collaging photographs that include memories of her with her friends, partner, and family, Nabila distorts, layers, and (re)constructs these memories as a memory hacking tool. Her practice explores relationships as digital relics as she visualises her platonic, romantic and familial bonds through glitch-like compositions. Her paintings balance between youthful recklessness and personal history, reflecting the fleeting yet unforgettable nature of human connection.
In her paintings, Nabila challenges traditional notions of figurative painting through her use of technology as a tool and a concept. Transcending autobiography, universal emotions of love, loss and nostalgia are captured in Nabila’s lively paintings. Her daydream-like paintings create a space in which the past lingers like an open browser tab that loops endlessly between closure and longing.
