BIOGRAPHY
Nabila Aviani (b.2000) is an Indonesian-born figurative painter, raised in the United Arab Emirates and based in The Hague, Netherlands.Nabila holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, specialising in painting, from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. She is now an active member of the artist collective The Raw Pulse Collective based in The Hague. Her earlier works consisted of destigmatising mental health and identity struggles and her previous paintings served as emotional diaries capturing the intensity of mania, depression and self-exploration through raw and chaotic compositions.
In her current works, Nabila explores memories, relationships and the emotional weight of personal connections. She explores the significance of relationships in shaping her identity through her use of humour and vivid storytelling. Nabila reconstructs memories of platonic, romantic and familial bonds and balances nostalgia, closure and appreciation for those who stayed and left. To visualise the impact of these relationships, she creates a narrative in each painting by digital collaging and blending raw emotions with reckless youthful energy.
Her artistic practice challenges traditional notions of figurative paintings by exploring the use of technology and digital collaging as a means of narrative and memory reconstruction tool. Her practice transcends the autobiography as she taps into the emotions of love, loss, nostalgia and closure. In her paintings, she reflects the nostalgia of coming of age and celebrates the love and appreciation for those who stayed while offering closure for those who left. Through her use of bold compositions and vivid storytelling, she creates a deeply personal yet universally relatable exploration of loss and connection. In this, painting is used as a psychological tool to process, archive and reinterpret lived experiences, making her work an act of self-reconciliation.
