"My ghastly face upon seeing my psychosis demons", oil paint on canvas, 70 cm x 70 cm, 2024.
The self-portrait of the figure looming out of a dark shadow attempts to capture the emotions of fear and anxiety that one feels when going through psychosis. Many who endure psychosis experience a seperation from their mind – losing touch of reality, a distorted sense of perception and tends to experience delusions and hallucinations. The painting is a frozen still that captures the artist’s face upon seeing her demons during her psychotic break. The lack of eyeballs and the gasping mouth certainly visualises the fright experience by the artist, suggesting a sense of a fight or flight.
